A little about us

Olwen & Tony
Olwen & Tony

Olwen, Tony and Lee have lived at 19 The Green, Seaton Carew since 1972.  When they first moved in the house it was a Multi-occupancy independant-living retirement home that was run-down and in a poor state of repair.

Their very first Christmas was spent on the roof, after a heavy storm blew half of the old roof off.  From that day on it has been a labour of love to bring the house back to life; updating and modernising it while maintaining the historic features and beauty.  Their work has been rewarded by the Hartlepool Historic Society.

In 2011 Lee took over the day-to-day running of the guest house to allow Olwen and Tony to (semi)retire – when busy they often lend a helping hand with Breakfasts!  Tony’s To-Do list is as long today as it ever was and he will often be seen tootling around in his bright orange over-alls, in the garden or up a ladder.

About the house

The property comprises of two main buildings: the main house is a listed Georgian building and overlooks the village green and the sea. The Annexe building which is accessed through the Italian-themed Loggia via our beautiful south facing garden, for all of our guests to enjoy.

Tony and Lee converted a derelict old cottage into the Annexe building to the rear of Altonlea Lodge in 1998, increasing the number of rooms from 5 to 11.  We have 4 guest rooms on the Ground floor to facilitate easy access for all of our guests. The Annexe building has been decorated to reflect the Mediterranean feel inspired by the Loggia – the glass corridor opening onto the garden which connects the two buildings.

The Loggia is home to our Kitchenette, where guests can find cutlery and plates for a meal or a fridge to store food and drinks.  Theres also a fridge and microwave for guests who are working away from home to be a little less reliant on takeaway and fast food.  The kitchenette is accessed with the same single room key and so it available at any time day or night.

This is our head of housekeeping, Janet. She is the person who turns our rooms around ready for the next guest, but she also cleans your room during your stay. When possible, Monday to Friday, she will try to organise her time to get into your room while you’re eating your breakfast so you have a nice clean and fresh room to return to. At busier times, she will go into rooms after you go out. Jan has been working with us for over 20 years and is part of the family!

Sheila is our latest member of the team. She often comes in and helps out during breakfast but also helps keep on top of general cleaning and keeping the place looking ‘spick & span’. Sheila has only been working here regularly for a 5 or 6 years but she helps keeps us all on task.
